Sushi Nanaimo

Sushi Nanaimo is a highly rated Japanese restaurant that seems to bring in a steady stream of patrons even late into the night. Similar to Sushi Garden (review here), the restaurant is Korean-run and also serves larger than average pieces of sashimi. My boyfriend had urged me to try this place for the tuna sashimi, which he said was exceptionally different from other restaurants.

So here was the Tuna Sashimi (1/2 order) that we ordered. I am normally not a huge fan of tuna sashimi but I was pleasantly surprised that the quality was on par with the substantially larger quantity of the sashimi. I definitely would order this again in the future.

Next, we had some Toro Sashimi (1/2 order). This was deliciously fresh and yummy.

For the special rolls, we opted for the Awesome Roll, which is basically a california roll topped with cooked salmon, sauce and your choice of bonito flakes or thin yam fries.

As for the Dragon Roll, it would be like any dragon roll you may find at other restaurants, except for the fact that the unagi is actually on top of the roll, along with your choice of bonito flakes or thin yam fries as well. I found that I liked having the unagi outside of the roll because its flavour as a part of the roll was more substantial this way.

At the end of our meal, I could see why this place is so popular with their impressive looking specialty rolls and large portions. However, it should be warned that the noise level of the restaurant can get to quite a high decibel with the Korean pop music blasting in the background mixed with the high chatter of the patrons and the shouting of orders by the waitresses to the sushi chefs. Other than that, I can't wait to come back!
