I know, I know, yet another review on a Japanese restaurant... But what can I say, I'm always keen to try new places with specialty rolls to satisfy my constant sushi cravings. On this occasion, we decided to try Red Tuna Sushi and Noodle Cafe (what a mouthful), a Korean-run sushi joint located on Granville St. I would discourage coming in groups any larger than 4 as this is the epitome of a hole-in-the-wall restaurant.
First up, the (small)
Sashimi Tower. This had sockeye salmon, real crab, spicy tuna, chop scallop, prawn tempura, smoked salmon, tobiki, masago, cucumber, avocado, onion and topped with olive oil, balsamic sauce and capers. This was quite impossible to have a little bit of everything in every bite so it really was a hit and miss depending on the bite. Some parts of the sashimi tower was quite yummy while other parts tasted a bit odd, especially with the olive oil and balsamic sauce. I wouldn't order this again.
The next two items that we ordered were the
Mango Crunch Roll and
Spicy Tuna Roll. The mango crunch roll consists of cucumber, avocado, prawn tempura topped with dried mango, Italian mango sauce and potato crunch. Because fresh mangoes weren't used, the taste of mango in the roll is considerably subtle. As for the spicy tuna roll, it wasn't bad but I prefer having the sashimi chopped and mixed with the sauce inside the roll, rather than merely having the sauce drizzled on top.
All in all, my experience at Red Tuna Sushi and Noodle Cafe was mediocre at best. The food was okay but nothing exciting to warrant a revisit in the future.
